What Causes Autoimmune Disease? The 3 Factors Explained

With Daniela Hess, MSEdFrom Daniela's Autoimmune Recovery Method class

The way I teach it, Autoimmunity needs 3 things to line up, not 1: a genetic susceptibility, a gut barrier that has become permeable, and triggers.

Your gut lining is 1 cell thick, and it decides what gets into your bloodstream and what stays out. When it loosens, things slip through that were never meant to cross, and your immune system meets them as intruders. Triggers tip an already susceptible body over the edge: grief, loss, years of chronic stress, infections, toxins, hormone shifts and certain foods.

You can't change your genes. Your gut barrier and your triggers are yours to work on, and that is where your power lives. Remission is possible, and this is where I start.

Let me just map out a little bit about the actual path of the Autoimmune Recovery Method. Every Autoimmune condition needs 3 things to line up, not 1. It needs 3. The first factor for an Autoimmune condition to develop is that there needs to be a genetic susceptibility.

An inherited tendency. This part, friends, we can't change. Okay? So, all right, facts.

We put that over in this box. Now, the second piece that needs to happen for an Autoimmune condition to develop is your gut barrier. And this is the piece that a lot of Women are not told. Now, the lining of your gut, this blows my mind, is 1 cell thick.

1 cell thick. It's small. And it decides what gets into your bloodstream and what stays out. So, when it becomes permeable, some of you may have heard the term called leaky gut, things now slip through a place that were never meant to cross.

So, your immune system meets them, meets what's slipping through, as intruders. Now, the third factor for an Autoimmune condition to develop are called triggers. And let me unpack that. Because while stress on its own is true, it's a trigger, it's too general.

So, think of triggers as a significant stressful event. Grief, loss, chronic stress carried over the years of our unnaturally busy lifestyles, which has become such a common way that many of us live now. Infections can be triggers. Think COVID.

Toxins, your hormones shifting can be triggers. Certain foods can be triggers. So, these are the things that tip an already susceptible body, genetics and leaky gut, breached permeable gut, it tips it over the edge. Now, second to you remembering that Remission is possible, please remember this.

You can't change factor 1, your genetics, but factors 2 and 3, your gut barrier and your triggers, these are ours to work on. And these areas, these 2 areas, are where our power lives.
